What We’re Reading: Color-Coded Insulin Packaging

There are a lot of things to keep on top of when you have diabetes — the amount of carbohydrate in the pasta sauce you had at lunch, the total miles your walking plan calls for this week, the number of insulin units you took to cover that midday snack — which can make it difficult to keep track of things like which type of insulin you just grabbed and used. But although it’s easy to accidentally inject yourself with rapid-acting insulin instead of long-acting insulin or vice versa, dealing with the consequences is not always so simple.

What We’re Reading: Share Tips, Win Prizes!

Over at DiabetesMine.com, blogger Amy Tenderich has just announced The DiabetesMine Holiday Survival Sweepstakes. This is a contest that encourages people to discuss their tips on handling the holidays with diabetes and gives them a chance to win some big prizes, too.

What We’re Reading: A Doodle for World Diabetes Day

People whose Internet home page is the ubiquitous Google.com know about the "doodles" that sometimes appear there. They are the playful alterations to the "Google" logo that commemorate holidays, special occasions, and notable anniversaries. Many millions see this site every day. But, as yet, there has been no diabetes-related doodle.

What We’re Reading: Diabetes and the Economy

In tough economic times like these, many people cut back on certain expenditures: Weekly movie night falls by the wayside and Saturday dinners out are replaced by cooking at home. But what happens when a person has scaled back on all the luxuries and is still having trouble making ends meet?

What We’re Reading: Young Voices Unite

This election season, visiting the voting booth isn’t the only way to make your voice be heard. Thanks to the online video campaign “Young Voices: Life With Diabetes,” teens and young adults with Type 1 diabetes will have a chance to share their personal stories with a national audience and describe how they think the next president can change the future of diabetes.

What We’re Reading: Meeting the Face of Change

If you have Type 2 diabetes, you may feel alone, but the fact is that roughly 20 million people in the United States are living with this condition. Although you likely cross paths with some of them every day on your way to work, in the grocery store, and in line at the post office, you might not be familiar with the stories of many of these people.

What We’re Reading: Nominate and Win!

Do you know someone whose hard work helping people with diabetes deserves to be rewarded? Whether it’s a special health-care professional or members of a family caring for a child with diabetes, now is your chance to help them get recognized and possibly win a weekend getaway. Two contests that honor people who help others manage their diabetes are currently calling for nominees; read on for the details.

What We’re Reading: Health Insurance Woes

Two new studies paint a grim picture of the health insurance landscape in the United States, while a state report on insurance in Massachusetts, which launched a program aimed at universal coverage in 2006, offers hope and a glimpse of the costs that such a program entails.

What We’re Reading: Taming the Buffet

For many people, summer is a time for sun, sand, surf, and…the buffet. While cruises are the most notorious venues of overindulgent eating, many other popular vacation spots offer all-you-can-eat menus. And once you’ve plunked down your cash for a buffet-style meal, you may be tempted to get more than your money’s worth. So what’s a person trying to eat healthfully to do?

What We’re Reading: The Benefits of Keeping a (Food) Diary

For many, the term “diary” conjures up an image of a closely guarded book filled with ruminations about school, siblings, and adolescent crushes. But diaries are not just places to gush about the newest pop star—as data published in the August edition of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows. When they are used to keep track of food intake, diaries can be effective tools for helping people lose weight.

What We’re Reading: CGMS Denial Week

Many health insurance companies routinely deny coverage to people who are prescribed a continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS). This device allows people with diabetes to know their glucose level, and whether it is rising or falling, at one- or five-minute intervals. Although it can be particularly useful for people who experience hypoglycemia unawareness and can detect an insulin pump malfunction, some insurance providers classify a CGMS as unnecessary and “experimental.”

What We’re Reading: Evaluating Health News

The profusion of health news stories reported in newspapers and magazines and on TV can be overwhelming—and sometimes confusing. It seems that you can’t open a paper or turn on the TV without hearing about the latest medical study and how essential it is to your well-being. Careful readers may wonder whether the attention-grabbing headlines really match up with the claims of the original studies.

What We’re Reading: Tim Russert

Last Friday, Tim Russert, who was the Washington Bureau Chief for NBC News and the host of "Meet the Press," died suddenly. An autopsy later showed that Mr. Russert, who was 58 years old, had experienced sudden cardiac arrest, which is often fatal and is frequently referred to as sudden cardiac death, or sudden death.

What We’re Reading: Finding a Doctor Who Listens

As someone who has diabetes, you probably have trips to the physician’s office down to a science. You pack up your logbook, write up your list of issues to discuss with the doctor, and make sure to take off your shoes and socks for a foot inspection before the doctor even enters the room. But once he’s there, what if you find that, although he’s hearing you, he isn’t really listening to what you have to say?

High Rates of Arthritis Found in People with Diabetes

If you have both diabetes and arthritis, you are not alone. According to a recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 52% of adults in the United States who have diabetes also have arthritis. That is almost double the arthritis rate for the general adult population, which stands at 27%. And the correlation between diabetes and arthritis holds up through all age groups.

What We’re Reading: Health At the End of the Rainbow

We’ve all heard the old adage "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." But this advice can be difficult to follow if just thinking about apples makes you cringe. As diabetes blogger Birdie Loo admits on Aiming for Grace, knowing that fruits and vegetables are healthy doesn’t necessarily make incorporating them into your diet any easier. But for her, inspiration to adopt a healthier diet came from an unlikely source: a project by Malaysian-born artist Tattfoo Tan.

What We’re Reading: Saving Money on Health Care

The cost of health-care in America and access to insurance coverage are already major issues in this year’s presidential campaign. But while politicians debate about how to address these issues, you may be wondering what you can do in the meantime to control your own health-care costs. If so, an article posted this week in the "Nursing Library" at RNCentral.com may be of interest to you.

The last week has seen presidential primary contests in more than 20 states as well as the unveiling of President Bush’s final budget proposal—and both the current president and prospective presidents are drawing strong reactions from the diabetes community.
