If you live in the area of Omaha, Nebraska, be sure to check out the “Taking Control of Your Diabetes Conference & Health Fair” taking place on Saturday, October 17, at the CenturyLink Center Omaha Convention Center.
Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) is a nonprofit organization founded by endocrinologist Steven Edelman, who himself has Type 1 diabetes, in 1995 to “educate and motivate people with diabetes to take a more active role in their condition.” The group has a number of initiatives, including its online reality series Extreme Diabetes Makeover, its cable-based television series featuring Dr. Edelman, and its national conferences and health fairs.
These conventions feature lectures from well-known speakers, health screenings, exhibits from diabetes-related companies and organizations, a healthful banquet lunch, and the opportunity to speak with diabetes health-care specialists.
The Omaha conference has both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes programs. The Type 1 program includes presentations on topics such as “Real World Carb Counting,” “What Else you Got? Other Medications for Type 1 Besides Insulin,” and “Trigger Finger and Other Musculoskeletal Complications.” The Type 2 program includes presentations on topics such as “An Explosion of Type 2 Treatment Options,” “Meter Readings: High, Low… Now What?,” and “To Eat or Not to Eat: What’s Right for You?”
The registration fee is $15 per person ($10 per person for two or more registering together) through 12 PM PST on October 14. Registrations sent through the mail must be postmarked by Friday, October 9. The onsite registration fee is $20 per person.
