If you live near Memphis, Tennessee, then you’ll want to check out the “Taking Control of Your Diabetes Conference & Health Fair” taking place on Saturday, April 16, at the Memphis Cook Convention Center.
Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) is a nonprofit organization founded by Steven Edelman, an endocrinologist with Type 1 diabetes, in 1995 to “educate and motivate people with diabetes to take a more active role in their condition.” The group has a number of initiatives, including its online reality series Extreme Diabetes Makeover; its weekly video series, “The Edelman Report”; and its national conferences and health fairs.
These conventions feature health screenings, lectures from well-known speakers, exhibits from diabetes-related companies and organizations, a healthful banquet lunch, and the opportunity to speak with diabetes specialists.
The Memphis conference has both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes tracks. The Type 1 program includes presentations on topics such as “Preventing, Detecting, and Treating Hypoglycemia,” “Alcohol and Diabetes: Do They Mix?” and “Type 1 Research Is Booming: Find Out the Latest and Greatest.” The Type 2 program includes presentations on topics such as “What’s New for Type 2s?” “Lighten Up Your Plate With Chef Lewis,” and “An In-Depth Look at Type 2 Treatments, Including Insulin.”
The registration fee is $15 per person ($10 per person for two or more registering together) through 12 PM PST on April 13. Registrations sent through the mail must be postmarked by Friday, April 8. The onsite registration fee is $20 per person.
