If you’re a Native American who lives in the area of Santa Rosa, California, be sure to check out the “Taking Control of Your Diabetes Conference & Health Fair,” taking place on June 20, 2015, at the Hyatt Vineyard Creek Hotel.

Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) is a nonprofit organization founded by endocrinologist Steven Edelman, who himself has Type 1 diabetes, in 1995 to “educate and motivate people with diabetes to take a more active role in their condition.” The group has a number of initiatives, including its online reality series Extreme Diabetes Makeover, its cable-based television series featuring Dr. Edelman, and its national conferences and health fairs.

These conventions feature lectures from well-known speakers, health screenings, exhibits from diabetes-related companies and organizations, a healthful banquet lunch, and the opportunity to speak with diabetes health-care specialists.

The Santa Rosa conference includes presentations on topics such as “I Know What I’m Suppose to Do, So Why Aren’t I Doing It?” “Laugh Your Way to Lower Blood Sugars,” and “Meter Readings: High, Low… Now What?” as well as fitness sessions such as “Rez Robics for Couch Potatoes.”

The registration fee is $10 per person ($5 per person for two or more registering together) through 12 PM PST on June 17. Registrations sent through the mail must be postmarked by Friday, June 12. The onsite registration fee is $20 per person. To register, call (800) 998-2693, visit www.tcoyd.org, or send the registration form available here to Taking Control of Your Diabetes, 1110 Camino Del Mar, Suite B, Del Mar, CA 92014.

Financial aid is available for people in need. For more information, call TCOYD at (800) 998-2693.

Conferences will be running throughout the year at various locations around the United States. To find out when a TCOYD health fair will be near you, click here to see the schedule of upcoming events.
