High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a serious condition that affects an estimated 1 in 3 adults in the United States and can lead to coronary heart disease, kidney failure, stroke, and other health problems. In honor of High Blood Pressure Education Month, we’d like to tell you about some resources that can help you to keep your blood pressure at a healthy level.
The Web site of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute includes an explanation of what high blood pressure is and what it is caused by, information about who is at risk for the condition, suggestions for living with hypertension, and links to ongoing clinical trials. A Spanish-language version of the site is also available.
The Mayo Clinic’s Web site includes guidance on preparing for a doctor’s appointment to have your blood pressure checked, information about alternative medicines that may help decrease blood pressure, videos on how to take your blood pressure using a manual or an automatic blood pressure monitor, expert answers on hypertension, and more.
The Web site of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides facts and statistics on blood pressure in the United States, answers to high blood pressure frequently asked questions, a 28-day guide to improving your heart health, and podcasts on preventing and dealing with high blood pressure. Links to information in Spanish are available at the bottom of this page.
