In 2007, diabetes blogger Bernard Farrell, of the Diabetes Technology blog, started up a search engine called Diabetes Web Search. Diabetes Web Search allows you to search through over 1,200 Web sites that deal specifically with diabetes, making it easier to find accurate and pertinent diabetes-related information.
What’s more, all proceeds from advertisements on Diabetes Web Search go to support Dr. Denise Faustman’s research into a cure for Type 1 diabetes. In 2001, Dr. Faustman published a study on a treatment that permanently cured mice with diabetes. She is now working at Massachusetts General Hospital on a follow-up study to test the treatment on humans.
You can watch an interview with Dr. Faustman here. In the interview, she discusses her research, which focuses on the immune-system T cells that destroy insulin-producing islet cells in people with Type 1 diabetes. She also gives an overview of her current study—and the difficulties she has had finding funding for it.
