If you live in the area of Overland Park, Kansas, be sure to check out the “Taking Control of Your Diabetes Conference & Health Fair” taking place on May 16, 2015, at the Overland Park Convention Center.
Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) is a nonprofit organization founded by endocrinologist Steven Edelman, who himself has Type 1 diabetes, in 1995 to “educate and motivate people with diabetes to take a more active role in their condition.” The group has a number of initiatives, including its online reality series Extreme Diabetes Makeover, its cable-based television series featuring Dr. Edelman, and its national conferences and health fairs.
These conventions feature lectures from well-known speakers, health screenings, exhibits from diabetes-related companies and organizations, a healthful banquet lunch, and the opportunity to speak with diabetes health-care specialists.
The Kansas conference has both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes programs. The Type 1 program includes presentations on topics such as “What Else You Got? Other Medications for Type 1 Diabetes Besides Insulin,” “In the Zone: CGM and Other Techniques for Keeping Your Glucose Levels in Check,” and “How Type 1 Diabetes Affects Your Gut: Celiac and Other GI Disorders.” The Type 2 program includes presentations on topics such as “An Explosion of Type 2 Treatment Options,” “Diabetes Care From Head to Toe: Thyroid, Heart, Kidneys, and Feet,” and “Meter Readings: High, Low… Now What?”
