Insulindependence, a diabetes and sports association focused on providing exercise-related resources for people living with diabetes, is accepting applications for its Junior Captain Program.
The purpose of the Junior Captain Program is to assist young people living with diabetes in building confidence to achieve their personal fitness goals. As part of the program, volunteer leaders (“Captains”) use skills they learn at the University of Insulindependence to mentor a young person (“Junior Captain”) one-on-one in preparing for a triathlon, relay race, or group expedition. The program culminates at one of several signature athletic events, in which Captains and Junior Captains work together as peers.
The program is open to children and teens ages 9 through 18. Participants are asked to fundraise to cover the costs of the program, but scholarships are available through the Pamela C. Lane Youth Scholarship Fund for those who qualify. Preliminary applications will be accepted online through February 15, 2013.
