A Smattering of Diabetes Oversharing

Next week, I will delve once more into the arena of product review. Last year, I wore a continuous glucose monitor for a few days and wrote about that experience (in "Continuous Glucose Monitoring and Me"). This year (at least so far this year), my reviewing prowess will be put to the test writing up my thoughts on the WaveSense Jazz blood glucose meter. I’ll leave it at that — leaving you, I’m sure, salivating to hear my opinions of new products for blood glucose monitoring.

Diabetes Alert Day Brings Free Tools and Tips

This past Tuesday, March 24, was American Diabetes Alert Day. This one-day "wake-up call" for the American public has taken place on the fourth Tuesday in March for the last 21 years. Sponsored by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the day aims to raise awareness of the seriousness of diabetes and urge people to find out if they or their loved ones are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. New FDA Commissioner Nominated

On March 15, President Barack Obama named Margaret (“Peggy”) Hamburg, MD, as his pick for the top job at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The nomination requires Senate confirmation. Hamburg is a former New York City health commissioner and has also held posts in the U.S. Health and Human Services Department and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. My Week? Oh, It Was Sew-Sew

I don’t remember when I didn’t know how to sew. I can still see myself as a little girl, sitting on my grandmother’s scratchy green sofa, embroidery hoop in one hand and a needle and floss in the other, following the pattern on an embroidery kit bought at Wall’s — a five-and-dime store near my grandmother’s house. Or sitting at a sewing machine at the front window in the living room, guiding fabric under a speeding needle.

That being said, I’ve done no more than sew on a button here and there or mend a small tear in a seam for probably 30 years. Until last week.
