If you’re having symptoms of low blood glucose (hypoglycemia), try to check your level with a meter right away, if one is available. If it confirms a low — or if you don’t have your meter with you but suspect your blood glucose is low — treat immediately by consuming 15 to 20 grams of fast-acting carbohydrate, such as glucose tablets, juice, or regular soda (not diet). Recheck your blood glucose after 15 minutes, and if it’s still below 70 mg/dL, repeat the treatment. Once your level returns to normal, follow up with a small snack if your next meal is more than an hour away.
