What is a Normal Blood Glucose?
Hi, I’m Alison Massey, Registered Dietician, Certified Diabetes Educator and Contributor to Diabetes Self-Management Magazine.
Today, I am going to answer the question “What is a normal blood sugar level?”.
The answer really varies, depending on whether or not someone has diabetes.
Normal Blood Sugar Level Without Diabetes
First, let’s talk about a person who does not have diabetes. A fasting blood sugar level for someone without diabetes is typically between 70 and 99 (milligrams per deciliter) mg/dL. Two hours after eating, blood sugar levels are typically less than 140 mg/dL.
Normal Blood Sugar Level With Diabetes
For a person with diabetes, the American Diabetes Association provides recommendations regarding blood sugar level target ranges. These recommendations are based on the levels that have been associated with a decrease risk in diabetes related complications. The fasting recommended range is between 80 and 130 mg/dL. Two hours after eating, blood sugar levels should be less than 180 mg/dL.
How to Monitor Blood Glucose?
A person with diabetes can monitor blood sugar levels at home in one of two ways. Either with a home blood glucose meter, like the one I’m holding here or with a continuous glucose monitor or CGM for short. I’m holding a CGM receiver here. It’s important to know where your blood sugar levels are day to day, in between your visits with your healthcare provider. A healthcare provider can give you guidance on when they suggest you might check your blood sugar levels at home.
