The diabetes community is praising the filmmakers behind the animated film “Turning Red” after several of the film’s characters were spotted wearing diabetes-management devices.

Here’s a sampling of some of the comments in the diabetes community on Reddit.

“I didn’t believe there were diabetic kids bc I’d never seen it. It may not seem like much, but it might be a big deal to a lot of people,” noted Reddit user FuzzyDunlop007.

Reddit user cyb3rd0rk said, “It’s absolutely amazing! We watched this as a family and our 12yo T1D instantly noticed the girl in the bathroom and said she was wearing a Dexcom! She had to rewind it to show it to us cause I almost didn’t believe it. She was so excited!”

“I literally choked on my drink when I saw this in the trailer and ran to show my wife. I was so excited; can’t wait to see the movie,” Reddit user theeurgist wrote.

The idea to include characters with diabetes came from Susan Fong, a technical supervisor on the film who is living with type 1 diabetes herself, according to an interview with diabetes advocacy group Beyond Type 1. In the interview, Fong says the film’s director, Academy Award winner Domee Shi, quickly accepted the pitch, and two characters are wearing infusion sets to be accurate to the time of the movie, the early 2000s.

Turning Red, the latest animated movie from Disney and Pixar, stars Rosalie Chieng as the voice of 13-year-old Mei Lee, who poofs into a giant red panda when she gets excited, and Sandra Oh as Mei Lee’s overprotective mother, Ming.
