Prediabetes means your blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. An estimated 96 million American adults โ more than 1 in 3 โ have prediabetes, and 80% are unaware.
The good news: prediabetes is largely reversible. Losing 5โ7% of body weight, getting 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, and making modest dietary changes can reduce the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes by 58% according to the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program study.
Clinical guidelines recommend that all adults aged 35+ be screened for prediabetes every 3 years, and that people with a positive risk assessment have a follow-up blood glucose or A1C test.
