To help prevent falls at home, start by removing or securing any tripping hazards. This includes tacking down or removing throw rugs, keeping walkways clear of clutter, and coiling or taping down electrical cords. Place nonslip mats inside and outside of your shower or tub, as well as near sinks in the kitchen and bathroom. Make sure your home is well-lit — add night lights in hallways and bathrooms, and use brighter bulbs where needed. Install grab bars in the bathroom and handrails on all stairways. Wearing supportive, non-skid shoes indoors can also help reduce the risk of slipping.
