Chair and Wheelchair Dancing

November 11, 2011 12:28 pm

If you have limited mobility, balance concerns, or other special considerations, standard dance styles may not work for you. But this doesn’t mean you can’t dance. Chair dancing and wheelchair dancing, which involve moving to music while seated in a chair or wheelchair, are other options that may appeal to you. Many dance styles can be adapted to seated dancing. When using a wheelchair, not only can you move within the chair, but the chair itself can be wheeled around the room in patterns or in coordinated movements with other dancers.

For those who would like to compete, there are wheelchair dancing competitions all the way up to the Paralympic level.

If you are interested in trying chair dancing, videos, DVDs, and audiotapes are available for purchase at[1] or by calling (800) 551-4FUN (4386). Information about wheelchair dancing is available from the American DanceWheels Foundation, located online at[2].
