Accept your feelings. A diagnosis of diabetes comes with many emotions that may range from fear to frustration to relief. These emotions affect the person with diabetes as well as his family, friends, and acquaintances. Experiencing these emotions is normal and necessary for a successful diabetes journey.
Use positive reframing. Positive reframing is a technique that can help you change the way you look at certain aspects of your diabetes care. It is not the same as denying your true feelings, but it can help you to see things in a more positive light. Here are some examples of how it works:
Situation: You resent having to watch everything you eat.
Your feelings or thoughts: Life is unfair. No one has the problems that I have.
Reframe: People without diabetes often have to watch what they eat for a variety of reasons. I’m doing what’s best for my health, just like they are.
Situation: You have an unexpectedly high A1C at your health-care provider visit.
Your feelings or thoughts: I give up. I can’t do this anymore.
Reframe: Sometimes blood glucose levels are hard to understand. It’s OK; I’m not perfect. I’ll take steps to get my A1C down over the next few months.
Get support. Involve your family, friends, and other people who support you in your diabetes journey. Their love and acceptance can help you share the load and improve your health.
If you can, reach out and support someone else who is facing one of life’s challenges. Focusing on someone other than yourself can give you a new perspective on your own difficulties.
