Finding a doctor

If you haven’t yet found a doctor you’re happy with, here are some suggestions for looking:

• Connect with other people in your area who have diabetes (try searching websites and blogs devoted to diabetes), and ask who they use.

• Look at the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) provider listings to find a physician who has met the criteria of the NCQA’s Diabetes Recognition Program. You will find the listings at

• Call (800) TEAMUP4, a service of the American Association of Diabetes Educators. They have listings of doctors who are diabetes educators, as well as of diabetes nurses and other health professionals who can help you find an appropriate diabetes doctor.

• Search for a diabetes support group and ask the members for referrals.

Once you’ve found a doctor you think you can work with, do your part by going to your appointments prepared with questions and by speaking honestly with your provider. Let your doctor know what your diabetes management goals and priorities are, and let him know how you’d like him to help.
