This is an update to my blog entry "There’s More Than One Way to Answer a Prayer," which ran on April 1.
Saying that religious freedom has its limits, the Marathon County, Wisconsin, district attorney has charged the parents of an 11-year-old girl who died from undiagnosed and untreated diabetes with second-degree reckless homicide. If convicted, the parents could face up to 25 years in prison.
Madeline Kara Neumann died on March 23 after her parents prayed for her recovery instead of taking her to a doctor.
“During the final 48 hours of her life, Kara became unable to speak, eat or walk and suffered breathing difficulties,” the report, posted April 29, 2008, on thenorthwestern.com, said.
While noting that parents have the religious freedom to raise their children according to their faith, “in this case it was necessary to weigh freedom of religion and parenting rights against the state’s interests in protecting freedom,” the district attorney was quoted as saying.
You can read the full account, plus a timeline of the child’s final hours, here.
