If you have Type 2 diabetes[1] and are living in the Forsyth County, North Carolina, region, then you may be interested in a Wake Forest University trial that is currently recruiting participants.
The Look AHEAD trial demonstrated that overweight and obese people with Type 2 who received intensive lifestyle interventions had reduced risk for diabetes complications[2]. To determine the most effective form of lifestyle intervention, researchers have designed the “Lifestyle Interventions for Treatment of Diabetes (LIFT Diabetes)” trial. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two intervention groups: One group will aim to lose 7% of body weight by reducing caloric intake, increasing physical activity to over 175 minutes a week, and attending weekly group meetings led by a community health worker for 12 months. The other group will aim to improve diabetes control by receiving education about beneficial health behaviors and attending monthly group meetings led by a study staff member.
Risk factors for heart disease such as glucose control, blood pressure, and cholesterol will be measured at both 12 months and 24 months.
In order to be eligible, volunteers must be living in the Forsyth County, North Carolina, area and be at least 21 years old with Type 2 diabetes, an A1C[3] level (indicator of blood glucose control over the previous 2–3 months) between 5.0% and 11.0%, overweight or obesity, and a blood pressure level less than or equal to 160/100 mmHg.
For full eligibility criteria and researcher contact information, visit the study’s description on ClinicalTrials.gov[4].
