Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis, of ABC hit drama How To Get Away With Murder, has opened up about having prediabetes[1]. Branching away from her usual Hollywood productions, Davis is currently promoting the documentary A Touch of Sugar.

A Touch of Sugar exposes the diabetes epidemic that is impacting every community in the United Sates. Narrated by Davis, the documentary challenges the stigma around the lifestyles of people with type 2 diabetes. Through interviews with patients, doctors and families, the A Touch of Sugar hopes to reinforce that type 2 diabetes is an urgent public health issue that can no longer be ignored.

Davis has a specific interest in the topic because the condition affects her family. Her sisters, maternal grandmother, and great-aunt are three of the more than 30 million people[2] in the United States diagnosed with diabetes. What’s more, several years ago, Davis was herself diagnosed as having prediabetes. This means that her blood sugar level is high, but it does not rise to the level required for a diagnosis of diabetes. “It’s not something I talk about because it’s a disease a lot of us simply accept – growing up my family just called it ‘sugar.’ But, this must change”, Davis says to Americas Diabetes Challenge: Get to Your Goals[3], a program supported by Merck to help people with type 2 diabetes reach their A1C[4] (a measure of glucose control over the previous 2–3 months) goals.

In an interview with BuzzFeed News[5], Davis says that people don’t take diabetes as serious as they should. “They don’t understand that it permeates every aspect of your health and that it is, at the end of the day, a disease.”
