For the last year I have talked to you about my journey with diabetes, the struggles and mistakes along the way. Every time I sat down to write a new article, I wanted to encourage you, to let you know that there are others who feel the way you do.
I feel that this is the right time for me to wrap my series. As I say goodbye to the Diabetes Self-Management blog, my biggest hope is that you will share your journey too. The battles you go through, the way you cope, and the importance of taking care of yourself — those experiences will help those around you. Do not keep all of that inside.
The everyday struggle with diabetes can wear you down, I know. But sharing helps you realize how many others are struggling along with you. There are people close to you who need to hear how you are coping, and who can help when things are not going well.
Diabetes is such a private condition. It can carry with it a load of shame that keeps you silent. May I encourage you to let others in on the secret of what it is like to have diabetes? Give them the gift of your experience, of the things you have learned.
Most especially, take care of yourself. Keep doing the things that will help you feel better as you learn how to live with diabetes. And please do not let this condition make you give up on your dreams.
C. S. Lewis said, “You are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream.” That goes for those of us with diabetes too.
I wish you all the best.
