Go Blue for Breakfast This World Diabetes Day

We are fast approaching World Diabetes Day, celebrated annually on November 14 to raise global awareness of the condition, and what better a way to mark the occasion than by hosting a healthful breakfast in your community?

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), skipping breakfast is associated with weight gain — one of the main risk factors for Type 2 diabetes[1] — while eating a healthful breakfast is known to control appetite and blood glucose levels and decrease the risk of developing the condition. Nutritious breakfast options include[2] eggs, unsweetened yogurt, peanut butter, a piece of fresh fruit, grilled chicken or turkey, nuts and seeds, whole grains, and unsweetened tea or coffee.

To highlight the importance of healthful eating for both avoiding and controlling Type 2 diabetes, the IDF recommends organizing a nourishing breakfast for family, friends, colleagues, and local officials in your city or town. For increased publicity for your event, choose a central location, and invite the media to attend. Ask your guests to wear blue, the color of the blue circle — the symbol for diabetes awareness — and when your gathering is complete, be sure to send pictures to the World Diabetes Day Flickr group[3].
