This winter has brought a lot of snow, even for states that normally stay warm through the colder months. With the possibility of snowstorms still looming, here are some tips that can help you be more prepared for all that winter has to bring.
No matter where you live, having an emergency kit at home is a good idea. You can either purchase a premade one or make one yourself. Supplies for these kits often include flashlights, batteries, first-aid kits, protective gloves, a waterproof bag or container, and more. For winter, it may be a good idea to add blankets, hand warmers, and even a tow rope and shovel for snowy conditions. For those with diabetes, you may want to further customize your supplies.
Amy Tenderich writes in her recent article “Good D-Scouts Are Prepared” about several important supplies to keep in mind, for snow or other emergencies:
- A FRIO pack (or other convenient cold pack) and a storage container for insulin
- Non-perishable food
- About a week’s worth of diabetes supplies
- Glucose tablets and glucagon
- Syringes and long-acting insulin
Don’t forget to replace anything that may be expired or no longer fresh. You may also want to consider placing a kit in your car or at work, just in case.
