What We’re Reading: World Diabetes Day

Web Team

November 21, 2007

This week, we’d like to direct your attention to coverage of the 16th annual World Diabetes Day, which took place on November 14.

According to this post on www.dlife.com, the International Diabetes Federation established World Diabetes Day in 1991, but 2007 marked the first year that the United Nations and its member countries officially recognized the day. This post at About.com: Diabetes by Debra Manzella, R.N., notes that this year’s theme was diabetes in children and adolescents, 70,000 of whom are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes annually. (An increasing number of children and adolescents are developing Type 2 diabetes, as well.)

Other members of the diabetes blogging community, including George Whittier of The B.A.D. Blog and Amy Tenderich of Diabetes Mine, also wrote about World Diabetes Day and how they commemorated the occasion.

Over 250 landmarks, such as New York’s Empire State Building, San Francisco’s Coit Tower, and London’s Eye, were lit up in blue, the official color of the campaign, to embrace the spirit of the day. For images from World Diabetes Day events around the globe, visit the official World Diabetes Day Web site.
