What We’re Reading: Diabetes Restaurant Month

With the convenience of eating out, many Americans consume an increasing number of calories at fast food and other restaurants. Eating out and eating healthy can be a challenge — even more so for those with diabetes or other dietary requirements. Former professional basketball player Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, who has Type 2 diabetes, is teaming together with Merck to create a new program called “Diabetes Restaurant Month.” During these weeks, participating restaurants in a particular city will feature select recipes that make regular dishes more diabetes-friendly. So far, 16 cities have participated, including New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Chicago, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. In each city, one lucky participant will have a chance to dine with Earl Monroe and a certified diabetes educator.
This program is meant to show that eating out can feature healthy choices, and to encourage those with diabetes to “take small steps toward a healthier lifestyle.” You can learn more about Diabetes Restaurant Month, meal planning, recipes, and more on www.MerckDiabetes.com.
