What We’re Reading: An Unexpected Moment of Kindness

Web Team

April 7, 2011

If you are an avid reader of diabetes blogs, you may find many entries about the triumphs and difficulties of having the condition. We’d like to share with you a brief story that brightened up our rainy spring day.

A little while ago, Kerri Morrone Sparling — a blogger with Type 1 diabetes — wrote about her trip to a Dunkin’ Donuts. As she received her order, Kerri double-checked to make sure that her coffee had been made with Splenda, explaining that she has diabetes. Instead of simply answering yes or no, the young man at the drive-through window said, “Yours is definitely Splenda. I’m positive‚Ķ My mom has Type 1… How are you doing?” They proceeded to have a brief conversation, which ended with the young man’s excited note that he would tell his mother that he had met another person with Type 1. This touching incident — encountered on a routine coffee run — reminds us of something that can be easily forgotten amidst the difficulties we encounter daily: “People with diabetes are everywhere. And so are the people who love them.”

Perhaps Kerri’s story reminds you of other chance encounters with the unexpected. Do you have any stories of moments that touched you or brightened your day? Please feel free to share in the comments!
