Diabetes Self-Management Blog

If you are an active person with diabetes, you may be familiar with the Diabetes Exercise and Sports Association (DESA) or Insulindependence, two organizations that have worked independently since 2005 “to provide exercise-related resources for people living with diabetes.” In a press release from March 12, the two associations have announced a merger.

Based on the terms of the agreement, DESA will transfer its marketing and business and registration assets to Insulindependence, while DESA’s mission and programs will be carried out through the Insulindependence headquarters in San Diego.

Currently, Insulindependence has outposts in 20 cities across the country, where volunteers are trained to lead free community fitness events. With the incoming support of the former DESA volunteers, Insulindependence hopes to expand its presence to 30 cities in 2012. The association will continue to offer its regional and national events, scholarship awards for youth and teens, online resources, volunteer training, youth mentor programs, and more.

According to Insulindependence President and Founder Peter Nerothin, “Our grassroots network is a great complement to clinical health-care. Anyone with questions about managing diabetes through exercise is welcome to get involved. It’s really simple—just show up.”

To learn more about the merger, see the press release on the Insulindependence Web site, or check out the site’s merger FAQ.
