Free Classes at Type 1 UniversityWeb Team January 7, 2012 If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get a better handle on your diabetes control, then you’re in luck: The online education program “Type 1 University” will be offering free classes for the month of January. Type 1 University is the brainchild of Gary Scheiner, a certified diabetes educator, exercise physiologist, and person with Type 1 diabetes. Live courses, which typically cost $29.95 per course, cover topics such as “Mastering Pump Therapy,” “Strike the Spike: After-Meal Glucose Control,” and “Blood Glucose Control During Sports & Exercise.” (Prerecorded lessons are $19.95 per course.) Classes are 45 to 60 minutes long, include a PDF of the slides used, and provide the opportunity to post questions to the instructor. To learn more, and to register for classes, visit the Type 1 University Web site. This blog entry was written by Web Editor Diane Fennell. Comments:
What a wonderful idea for learning! What a big disappointment to learn classes are full--diabetes and pregnancy is not my interest, I am well past the age where that is an issue. Hopefully, if the classes are offered again, we all will receive information timely. Judith

Since soooo many people are displeased that the notice was given after classes were full, I suggest that you show good faith by offering one free class to any of these repliers. Sound fair to you? Thanx for your consideration.

Hello Mr. Colby, Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, we are not affiliated with Type 1 University and therefore have no control over the classes offered. I am sorry for the disappointment. Best, Diane Fennell Web Editor

Clearly interest was high in Gary Scheiner's online courses, because the last few spots in many of the classes filled up in a hurry. We're sorry that not everyone could get into the class of their choice. But looking on the bright side, now you all know about a great, moderately priced option for diabetes education. We hope more of you will be able to take advantage of it in the year to come. Sincerely, Diane Fennell Web Editor

Hi Bev, Thanks for your comment. Several of the classes offered by Type 1 University appear to be suitable for those with Type 2 diabetes as well, including "Getting the Most From Your Continuous Glucose Monitor" and "Weight Loss for Insulin Users." (Please note that the free courses on these topics are full, but that these classes are available for $29.95 on alternative dates.) You can contact Integrated Diabetes Services at (877) 735-3648 or info@integrateddiabetes.com for more information. If we see other Web-based courses specifically geared toward people with Type 2 diabetes, we will be sure to post them here. Thanks, Diane Fennell Web Editor

Hi Sharon, I am sorry we were not able to alert you to this opportunity earlier; we posted the information as soon as we found out about it (we are not affiliated with Type 1 University). With regard to all classes being full, as noted in my comments above, two of the free classes are still accepting registrants. You can register for them at the following Web pages: Managing Pregnancy With Type 1 Diabetes: https://www.type1university.com/index.php?option=com_eventbooking&view=category&Itemid=34 Practical Pramlintide: Making Effective Use of Symlin: https://www.type1university.com/index.php?option=com_eventbooking&view=category&Itemid=37 Best, Diane Fennell Web Editor

Poor planning on your part. Here it is, January 11th and I just received this information. And, guess what, all classes are closed! I think we should have had this information at least in December, so we could plan and enroll. I'm not happy about this.

Hi, what about some Type 2 classes? They are just as important!

Hi BarbN and Becky, Thanks for your comments. Although many of the free classes have reached capacity, "Managing Pregnancy With Type 1 Diabetes" on January 26 at 1 PM and "Practical Pramlintide: Making Effective Use of Symlin" on January 31 at 8 PM both still have slots available. You can register for these free classes at the following Web pages: Managing Pregnancy With Type 1 Diabetes: https://www.type1university.com/index.php?option=com_eventbooking&view=category&Itemid=34 Practical Pramlintide: Making Effective Use of Symlin: https://www.type1university.com/index.php?option=com_eventbooking&view=category&Itemid=37 Thank you for your interest in Diabetes Self-Management! Too bad we didn't get this information in Dec. All classes are closed.
