Affordable Drug Combo Slashes Heart Risk by As Much As 80%
People at high risk of having a heart attack or stroke can cut their risk by as much as 80% by using a combination of three common medicines — all of them available as generics — according to a recent study published in The American Journal of Managed Care. Heart disease death rates and the risk of stroke are roughly two to four times higher in adults with diabetes than in people without diabetes…
My Cholesterol, My LDL, and That Statin Dose
The past week has been Time of the Doctors. On Monday I visited the endocrinology clinic for my quarterly checkup. Yesterday I met with my PCP for my six-month visit. Both doctors had on hand my complete blood lab results from the many vials that were drawn from my arm last week. All in all, my health snapshot looks good. This week, rather than go through the things I talked about with my doctors — and I always discuss quite a bit with them — I’ll focus on the conversations related to my cholesterol and my diabetes…
Is Weight Good for You?
For those interested in weight issues, new Canadian research shows, again, that being “overweight” — having a body mass index (BMI) of 25–29.9 — is associated with a longer lifespan than that of “normal” weight people (BMI 18.5–24.9). According to the study, people who are mildly “obese,” (obesity class I, BMI 30–34.9) have the same risk of death as normal weight people. Not until weight reaches obesity class II (BMI 35–39.9) does heaviness seem to increase mortality…
Tight Control OK if You Want It
Surprise! I — and various other diabetes bloggers — were right. Ever since results from the ACCORD study were released last year, some in the media and the medical establishment have been reporting that strict blood glucose control is bad for people with diabetes…
Research on Rosiglitazone
According to research presented at the American Diabetes Association’s 69th Scientific Sessions, using rosiglitazone (brand name Avandia) in combination with metformin or a sulfonylurea does not increase the risk for cardiovascular disease or death in people with Type 2 diabetes. But some scientists have met these results critically, claiming that the study does not have enough statistical power to resolve any of the controversy surrounding this drug.
Food Group Superfoods: Protein Foods (Part 8)
Only two more food groups left to go! We’re working our way through the six food groups, and this week we’ve come to protein sources. (Check out “Food Group Superfoods: Milk Products (Part 7)” for information about yogurt and kefir.) The protein group is a little tricky in some ways because there are both pros and cons to foods in this category. For example, beef often gets a bad rap because of its saturated fat content. (Plus, a new study shows that people who eat too much red meat may have a shortened life span). But beef contains important nutrients, such as iron, phosphorous, and, of course, protein. But I’m not going to “beef” about beef. Instead, let’s look at two animal sources of protein, and then next week we’ll look at two plant sources…
