Print Diabetes From the Air? :: Diabetes Self-Management

A few weeks ago, we posted an interview with author-researcher Donna Jackson Nakazawa that touched on the connection between toxins and diabetes. While much of the interview focused on Type 1 diabetes and autoimmune disorders, it also noted that a growing body of evidence links toxins with Type 2 diabetes.

Yesterday, another link to Type 2 diabetes was announced. A study published on the Web site of the journal Circulation found that among mice who were obese from a fast-food diet, those exposed to polluted air had greater insulin resistance and body-fat inflammation than those who were given only clean air to breathe.

I sure have found it hard to keep my blood sugar on track. Being on disability doesn't mean you get a lot of help with supplies. I have gained weight due a injury on my foot and can walk or stand on it for too long. I have need of getting my test strips but without insurance can not afford them do you have any information that can help me?

This is not the first study linkng air pollution to diabetes. In my book, I cited a report by Alan Lockwood on the strong association between air pollution and diabetes prevalence. States with a lot of pollution had a lot of diabetes.

At the time, I wondered if this connection was caused by an association between air pollution and low income. But that's probably not what's happening with the mice. So, as the authors of this study conclude, air pollution is probably promotes inflammation and insulin resistance.

Not much we as individuals can do about it, I imagine. Or is there?

Does this also mean that if a person who is pre
diabetes - not on medication as yet - family history of diabetes can hasten the onset of Type 2 diabetes due to chain smoking?
