Glucose Meter for iPhone and iPod touch Now Available

On May 2, pharmaceutical company Sanofi US announced that iBGStar, the first FDA-approved blood glucose meter for use with the iPhone and iPod touch, was commercially available in the United States.

The iBGStar Blood Glucose Monitoring System consists of the iBGStar Blood Glucose Meter and iBGStar Diabetes Manager App. The blood glucose meter, which measures 0.94″ × 2.17″ × 0.39″, directly connects to and communicates with the iPhone or iPod touch via the dock connector. The meter can be used while connected to an iPhone or iPod touch or can be used separately and synchronized to the device later. The meter does not require coding, uses a 0.5-microliter blood sample, and returns results in 6 seconds.

The iBGStar Diabetes Manager App allows users to analyze their blood glucose patterns through graphs and statistics; keep track of the effect of carbohydrate intake, insulin doses, and other activities on blood glucose levels; tag glucose readings with customizable phrases; and e-mail data to health-care providers. Readings from the meter are automatically loaded into the app when synchronized. The app is available for free from the app store on the iPhone and iPod touch or from www.itunes.com/appstore.

The iBGStar is currently available for purchase at Apple stores and all Walgreens stores nationwide, online at Apple.com and Walgreens.com, and through diabetic care services. The Apple version of the iBGStar package includes 50 test strips and is priced at about $100, while the Walgreens package, which includes a vial of 10 test strips, is priced at roughly $75. Test strips may be covered under certain health insurance plans, and Sanofi advises consumers to check directly with their insurance provider.
