The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
May 12, 2012
This week, we’d like to direct your attention to a young man being honored in The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for his work with children who have diabetes.
Ever since being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age seven, Kenneth Smalls-Muldrew of Pooler, Georgia, has been speaking to student groups about diabetes and raising money for a cure: When he told his classmates about his diagnosis, he was “alienated and ostracized” by his class. But when a teacher asked him to share his story with the school, he worked up his courage and made a speech about diabetes in front of the entire student body. “After that speech, I wanted to do more to help every child diagnosed with diabetes to want to stay strong, to want to stay motivated, and to want to help others with diabetes as well,” he noted.
Now a 17-year-old senior at Savannah Early College, Smalls-Muldrew continues to speak at schools about having diabetes, urging students to participate in activities that support the American Diabetes Association. He also volunteers at a Camp CoDiak, a summer camp for children who have diabetes, showing them how to stay healthy and maintain good self-esteem and teaching them that “they are normal kids like everybody else in the world.”
