What We're Reading: Nominate and Win!

Web Team

Do you know someone whose hard work helping people with diabetes deserves to be rewarded? Whether it's a special health-care professional or members of a family caring for a child with diabetes, now is your chance to help them get recognized and possibly win a weekend getaway. Two contests that honor people who help others manage their diabetes are currently calling for nominees; read on for the details.

The company Pump Wear, Inc., which makes specialty clothing and insulin pump accessories, along with several other sponsors is offering families of children with diabetes a chance to win a free "Caring and Sharing Weekend" at the Paul Newman Double H Ranch Camp in Lake Luzerne, New York, next spring. Applicants for a spot must write a 200-word paragraph about why their family should be considered for the weekend getaway. Friends, educators, and families may also recommend another family for the weekend, which will take place April 24–26, 2009.

This will be the second year that Pump Wear and its cosponsors will be offering this weekend, the purpose of which is "to provide a haven for families to take a breath and enjoy time with their family and an opportunity to make friends." The weekend will feature activities, conference sessions, a talent show, and more.

The deadline for submitting a recommendation is October 31, 2008. Fifteen families will be chosen and are responsible for transporting themselves to the camp; the rest of the weekend is free.

You can find more information, download a recommendation form, and see a schedule of events for the weekend at www.pumpwear.com.

Another company—American Diabetes Wholesale, which provides discounted diabetes supplies to people who don't have health insurance—is calling for nominees for its second Diabetes Educator of the Year Award. The award aims to "recognize the unsung heroes of the diabetes epidemic," promoting and recognizing health-care professionals "who remain committed to helping those living with diabetes." The 2008 Diabetes Educator of the Year will be honored with a special ceremony and will win a two-night/three-day trip to Boca Raton, Florida, including airfare and hotel, for him or herself and a guest.

Any diabetes care professional is eligible for the award: Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs), nurses, doctors, and anyone else who helps people learn how to manage their diabetes effectively. These professionals can be nominated by patients, coworkers, other medical professionals, or anyone else familiar with their accomplishments. Nominations consist of an essay of 250 words or less explaining why the nominee should be the 2008 Diabetes Educator of the Year.

Nominations can be submitted online at www.americandiabeteswholesale.com/Contest and will be accepted until November 7, 2008.
