The Mysteries of Pain

David Spero

I had planned to follow up last week’s blog entry on pain ("An Epidemic of Pain") with suggestions about how to self-manage it. But my mother sandbagged me. She gave me a book called Phantoms in the Brain by neurologist V.S. Ramachandran, M.D., Ph.D. This book completely changed the way I think about pain.

Diabetes and Celiac Disease (Part 1)

Amy Campbell

You may recall that I attended the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) annual meeting a few weeks ago.  When I arrived at the conference on Wednesday, I was a little late getting to the 1:30 session that I really wanted to go to and, as a result, got closed out. Well, it's been a relatively blah week here, and I'll admit I've been a bit lax in preparing to write this week's blog entry. Mainly, I meant to cover some things from the AADE meeting earlier this month. However, I didn't take a suitcase large enough to hold all of the materials I collected, so I shipped them to myself. Problem is, the box hasn't arrived yet. (If it ever does—the shipping company being used is one I've had numerous problems with.)

Diabetes, Stomach Stuff, and Spousal Stress

Eric Lagergren

Last Thursday, I left work early because I was feeling out of it. These were the typical nondescript symptoms of my youth, more often than not the ones I’d call upon when I wanted nothing more than to tune out and do nothing. My intention last week was to go home and nap for a good three or four hours, then enjoy a quiet evening before returning to work the next day, the lazy weekend stretching out before me.

It didn’t turn out that way.
