Foot Ulcer Treatment Linked to Death from Cancer

The prescription gel becaplermin (brand name Regranex), which is used to treat foot ulcers and leg ulcers, is being investigated for a possible link to increased cancer risk in people with diabetes.

Love Your Feet

As a Diabetes Self-Management reader, you are probably already expert on foot care. But a short reminder course can’t hurt. Foot pain is one of the most common symptoms of diabetes. It can be a warning sign of serious circulation or nerve problems that, if ignored, could lead to loss of use of the foot. Fortunately, foot pain can almost always be prevented, improved, and usually eliminated completely. So it’s worth reviewing.

If the Shoe Fits…

Are you sure that the shoes you wear are the right size for your feet? A recent study suggests that a large proportion of people with diabetes may be wearing the wrong size shoes, potentially exposing themselves to foot injuries that could lead to complications such as foot ulcers and amputation.

Tales of Hyperglycemia, Procrastination, and a Full Moon

How has my diabetes week gone? Don’t ask! While my blood glucose has been better than it had been for a couple of months, lack of maintenance on my feet resulted in some minor surgery, and attempts to keep a glucose sensor from coming loose led to me mooning the neighbor’s house. (Hopefully, said neighbor wasn’t looking out the window at the time.)
