New Answers on Exercise

The first session I attended at last month’s ADA Scientific Sessions featured three experts on the effects of exercise. The room was packed with interested doctors. The moderator assured us that all three researchers were "well-funded," which I guess is high praise in research circles.

I returned to the gym on Tuesday for the first time in a couple of months. Yes, for all I've written and talked about my love of spinning classes (and that I'd even purchased cycling shoes and new cycling shorts in March), I've been on an extended hiatus from the local community college's recreation complex.

High Rates of Arthritis Found in People with Diabetes

If you have both diabetes and arthritis, you are not alone. According to a recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 52% of adults in the United States who have diabetes also have arthritis. That is almost double the arthritis rate for the general adult population, which stands at 27%. And the correlation between diabetes and arthritis holds up through all age groups.

The New York Times Discovers Exercise

The April 29 issue of The New York Times science section had a good article by Jane Brody on the benefits of exercise in chronic illness, "You Name It, Exercise Will Make It Better." It could have been stronger, but it does make the true point that physical activity is the single best health practice, no matter what your condition.

Two Diabetes Contests Encourage Creativity

Two contests that combine artistry, diabetes, and celebrity judges are aiming to increase diabetes awareness and inspire people to get creative. The Dancin' To Change Diabetes Contest is calling for video entries through June 1, while the Inspired by Diabetes Creative Expression Competition has just chosen its winners. Both contests will pay tribute to their winners in San Francisco during the American Diabetes Association (ADA) 68th Annual Scientific Sessions in June.
