DIETARY D

Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI), established by the US Institute of Medicine:

0–50 years: 200 IU (5 mcg*)

51–70 years: 400 IU (10 mcg)

71 or older: 600 IU (15 mcg)

Tolerable Upper Intake: 2,000 IU/day (50 mcg)

Daily Value, as listed on Nutrition Facts labels: 400 IU (10 mcg)

*mcg=micrograms

American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation for breast-fed infants: 400 IU/day soon after birth until weaning

BLOOD LEVELS†
(Listed as 25-OH D or 25-vitamin D on a lab report)

Deficiency: 0–20 ng/ml (0–30 nmol/l)

Insufficiency: 21–30 ng/ml (51–75 nmol/l)

Sufficient: 30–100 ng/ml (76–249 nmol/l)

Toxicity: greater than 100 ng/ml (250 nmol/l)
