How can you make healthful eating a family affair for your family? Here are some tips:

• Lead by example. If you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, you can be a great role model for the rest of your family. Your food choices will influence the health of those around you.

• Stock your cupboards and refrigerator with a rich variety of fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, and lean protein sources to make the transition to healthy eating easier. Gradually replace empty-calorie snacks with more nutritious alternatives.

• Involve your family in all aspects of food preparation and cleanup. Take time to meet as a family, learn about better food choices, and plan healthy meals for the upcoming week. Include new and improved versions of favorite recipes. Family trips to the grocery store, followed by cooking a meal together when possible, helps everyone feel included in a better way of eating and provides even more support for the person with diabetes.
