To reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), work with your health-care provider to monitor your risk level and develop an appropriate plan in response. Remember to do the following:

• Ask questions about your diabetes and your risk of heart disease.

• Understand what cardiovascular biomarker tests might be helpful in recognizing your heart disease risk.

• For more information on cardiovascular biomarker tests (or any other laboratory test), visit www.labtestsonline.org.

• Know the classic risk factors for heart disease and how they affect you.

• Develop habits for heart-healthy eating, including portion control for weight management and blood glucose control.

• Engage in regular physical activity and exercise based on your health-care provider’s recommendations.

• Minimize risky choices. Quit smoking!
