Monitoring for Control and Complications

SUPPLEMENTARY CONTENT

This list provides a summary of recommendations for various types of monitoring related to diabetes health. To individualize your diabetes management plan, the frequency and type of monitoring may be modified by your diabetes care team to best meet your needs.

These should be checked at every visit to your primary health-care provider:

  • Blood pressure
  • Feet (to identify any loss of sensation)

This should be checked every 3–6 months:

  • Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level

These tests should be done annually:

  • Dilated eye exam
  • Lipid level test
  • Microalbuminuria test (to test for kidney disease)
  • Serum creatinine measurement to estimate glomerular filtration rate GFR) (to test for kidney disease)
