Who Should Get a Flu Shot?

Return to Article

SUPPLEMENTARY CONTENT

While most people should get a flu shot each year, it’s especially important for the following groups to get vaccinated — either because they have an elevated risk of developing serious flu-related complications, or because they are in close contact with such individuals:

• Pregnant women

• Children under age five, and especially children between six months and two years of age (the vaccine is not approved for babies younger than six months.)

• People ages 50 and above

• People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions, including diabetes

• People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities

• People who live with or care for those at high risk for flu complications, including health-care workers, household members of high-risk individuals, and caregivers for babies under six months old (who are too young to be vaccinated)
