Symptoms of Depression

SUPPLEMENTARY CONTENT

If you experience five or more of these symptoms every day for at least two weeks and they are interfering with routine daily activities such as work, self-care, child care, or your social life, you should seek an evaluation for depression.

  • Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood
  • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex
  • Decreased energy, fatigue, or being “slowed down”
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
  • Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
  • Appetite or weight changes
  • Thoughts of death or suicide or suicide attempts
  • Restlessness or irritability
