Do you have an idea for a device or a Web application that would make life with diabetes easier? If so, you may want to enter the 2009 DiabetesMine Design Challenge, which this year will award prizes totaling $17,000.

DiabetesMine contest Sponsored by the nonprofit California HealthCare Foundation, the competition is “open to any individuals or organizations passionate about diabetes and product design” according to the press release. Three winners will be chosen by a seven-member judging panel that includes diabetes-care professionals, entrepreneurs, and designers from the California HealthCare Foundation, Medgadget.com, IDEO, and other companies.

Entrants will be eligible for the Grand Prize of $10,000 and second prize of $5,000, both of which also include a consulting session with Health and Wellness experts at the design firm IDEO. Entrants under the age of 18 will be eligible for a special Kids’ Cateogry prize of $2,000.

People can enter the contest either by submitting a two-minute video or a two- to three-page written document about their idea online. To learn more about the contest, watch a video about it, and see past winners’ entries, visit www.diabetesmine.com/designcontest. And you can get specifics on how to submit to this year’s contest at www.diabetesmine.com/designcontest/enter. The contest closes on May 1.
