This week at MyDiabetesCentral, Gretchen Becker writes about the dangers associated with fructose—specifically, increased blood triglycerides and risk of obesity. She discusses what this means for high-fructose corn syrup and other sweeteners, concluding that all added sugars should be avoided.

Becker also brings up a recent study on the effects of fructose on leptin, a hormone that regulates appetite and metabolism. In this experiment, laboratory mice were fed a high-fructose diet. When both these mice and other (control) mice were injected with leptin, the control mice ate less, while the fructose-fed mice did not, suggesting that they were resistant to the effects of leptin. Later, when the mice were given a high-calorie, high-fat diet, the fructose-fed mice gained more weight than the control mice.

This doesn’t mean, however, that you should avoid fruits because they contain fructose; most offer substantial health benefits, and some are even known as super fruits for their antioxidant activity.

  1. Sorry to disappoint you, Quinn, but that means exactly what it means-avoid fructose at all. There are no Super fruits, no Superman,no Super nations etc. Fructose is stronger than sugar and detrimental for people with Diabetes, the only suitable for Diabetes fruits are the relatively low-carb ones as berries:blue-, rasp-, straw-, black- . Anyone who controls his Diabetes without medication just through diet and exercise can tell you that. Simply ask. Fruits were never, in history of mankind, a year-around part of the diet. They are seasonal and their consumption should be limited or extremely avoided by Diabetics.

  2. Can we please make clear in every article if we are talking about Type 1 or Type 2 or both? I know us T1s are an elitist group in the 10% category, but we are often very active with our due diligence research and many times what’s true or good or bad for the T2 does not hol dfast for the T1.
