Diabetes Self-Management Blog

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States among cancers that affect both men and women, and people with diabetes are known to have an increased risk of developing the condition. In recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, which is dedicated to spreading awareness about preventing and treating this condition, we’d like to present the following resources:

This page from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention includes information about reducing your risk of colorectal cancer, symptoms of the condition, resources that can help pay for screening tests, questions to ask your doctor, and more.

The Web site of the Colon Cancer Alliance, the “largest patient advocacy organization dedicated to prevention, education, and early treatment,” provides information on upcoming events, such as online support chats and fundraising walks, as well as colon cancer statistics, information about screening, a glossary of terms, and more.

The National Cancer Institute’s Web site includes information about risk factors for colorectal cancer, links to clinical trials, condition-specific fact sheets, details about various types of colorectal cancer drugs, and more.

On DiabetesSelfManagement.com, the article “Preventing Colorectal Cancer,” by registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator Judy Giusti, provides information about the condition and its risk factors, as well as how diet and other lifestyle factors influence risk.
