Diabetes Self-Management Blog

Have you ever wondered how medicines and medical devices get approved? Would you like your voice to be heard in decision-making at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)? Are you looking to participate in a clinical trial? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you’ll want to check out the new FDA Patient Network Web site.

Launched in April, the FDA Patient Network gives patients the tools they need to understand and get involved in the FDA’s work. Features of the site include information describing how medical products are approved, details on off-label uses of drugs and investigational drugs, links to Webinars on drug safety, newsletter sign-ups, guidance on becoming an FDA patient representative, a search feature to find ongoing clinical trials, and more.

“This web site will open new channels of communication with the public, such as live chats with senior agency officials. It will help patients and consumers better understand the process for determining whether medical products are safe and effective and encourage them to contribute their ideas and concerns about the development and regulation of these products,” notes Margaret A. Hamburg, MD, Commissioner of the FDA.
