The criminal defense firm Katz & Phillips, P.A. is seeking applicants for its first-ever Ashley Rose Honorary Diabetes Law Student Scholarship Award.

In recognition of the fact that diabetes can make academic pursuits such as law school more challenging, the firm will be setting aside $1,000 to help eligible students who have Type 1 diabetes with their law school tuition. The award — named in honor of founding partner David Katz’s daughter, who was diagnosed with Type 1 at 18 months of age — is designed to “inspire those living with Type 1 diabetes to live happy and healthy lives and help achieve their goals.”

Applicants must supply a 500 to 1,000 word essay on one of the following topics: How living with diabetes has affected their education, how they overcame a challenge associated with having Type 1 diabetes, or how a famous individual with Type 1 inspired them to succeed. Those who are applying should also include a separate paragraph-long statement of how the scholarship will help them.

To be eligible, candidates must be either a current law student or entering a law school this year with a minimum 2.8 GPA. All applicants must submit an official copy of their transcript.

The deadline for applications is September 30, 2014. (Editor’s note: The deadline has been extended to December 31, 2014.)
