Now that National Diabetes Month is in full swing, a number of businesses and organizations are rolling out programs and events to raise awareness of diabetes and help those who have it manage the condition. While some of these may be thinly veiled marketing efforts, some appear to offer real help or services.

One special offer that may be of interest — to people with and without diabetes — is free blood testing at Walgreens stores. For people who have not been diagnosed with diabetes, free blood glucose tests will be administered (the results of which could indicate that a person has — or is likely to have — diabetes). For people who have been diagnosed with diabetes, free A1C tests are offered. The offer is limited to adults over age 18.

In addition to the testing, free consultation with a pharmacist will be available. And Walgreens will donate $1 to the American Diabetes Association for every test performed, up to $100,000.

The wellness events will take place at most 24-hour Walgreens stores between November 9 and 13 and between November 16 and 20. Each location will host a six-hour walk-in clinic on one of these days; no appointment is necessary.

For more information and to find an event in your area, visit the Walgreens Web site or call (877) W-and-You (926-3968).

The events are cosponsored by Novo Nordisk and Bayer HealthCare Diabetes Care and will be staffed in part by US Wellness, Inc.

  2. Had my A1c done at safeway today for free. although all our A1c in Canada are free. Results were 5.6% a bit too good to be believable so will put it down as 6% in the long term log.
